Millennium Park
Many people who come to the Chicago area enjoy a visit to Millennium Park. This magnificent park is approximately 25 acres and is filled with beautifully landscaped grounds. There are many lovely gardens, enormous sculptures and amazing architecture. The park is open everyday from 6am – 11pm and admission is always has free. There are also a variety of events taking place all the time throughout the park. You can check out their calendar of events to find what activities they will be hosting daily.
The Illinois Central Railroad once controlled the area that is now Millennium Park. Construction originally began in 1917 on what was then known as Grant Park. However, the park was to be built around the railroad tracks. When it was completed the railroad tracks were considered an eye sore. Twenty years later in 1997 plans were created for a new park that would be built over the railroad tracks.
Today Millennium Park is a popular gathering place to appreciate art, music, architecture and landscape design. There are a number of wonderful features that make this one of Chicago’s greatest highlights. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is one of the most sophisticated outdoor concert venues in the United States. Standing at 120 feet high, it has 4,000 fixed seats plus additional space is available on the Great Lawn for up to 7,000 people. Many free concerts and events take place here each year.
The Chase Promenade is a lovely tree-lined three-block stretch across the center of Millennium Park. It is here that you will find visitors enjoying festivals, family events and exhibitions year round.
Lurie Garden is a tribute to the city’s motto of “City in a Garden.” This 2.5 acre perennial garden was planted to represent the transformation of Chicago from flat, marshy lands to a powerful city.
